How long does SEO take?
The honest month by month timeline, what your starting point changes, what actually speeds rankings up, and the 90 day case that shows the ceiling.
The honest timeline
For a typical small to mid sized business website: expect early movement in 4 to 8 weeks, meaningful results in 3 to 6 months, and compounding returns from month 6 onward. Anyone promising page one in two weeks is describing either a keyword nobody searches or a tactic you will regret. Anyone saying SEO takes a year to show anything is hiding slow work behind a long timeline. The truth sits in the middle and depends on exactly three things: your starting point, your market, and your publishing pace.
Your starting point sets the clock
| Starting point | What moves first | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| New domain, new site | Indexing, then long tail terms | First rankings in 2 to 3 months, competitive terms in 6 to 12 |
| Established site, technical problems | Fixes unlock existing authority fast | Movement in 2 to 6 weeks, sometimes days |
| Established site, thin content | New and rebuilt pages | Meaningful gains in 2 to 4 months |
| Strong site entering new topics | New cluster pages | Fast: weeks, because authority transfers |
This is why the audit comes first in our process: a site with broken technical foundations often has rankings trapped inside it, and releasing them is the fastest SEO win that exists. Our record case, a DTC apparel brand, grew organic traffic 312 percent in 90 days, and that speed came from pairing technical fixes with content that matched buyer intent on an already established domain.
What actually happens month by month
Month 1: audit, fixes, keyword to page mapping, and the first content shipped. Google recrawls and long tail impressions start appearing in Search Console.
Months 2 to 3: pages earn their first positions, usually on longer, specific queries first. Rankings jump around. This volatility is normal and useful: it shows Google testing where you belong.
Months 4 to 6: the compounding starts. Pages support each other through internal links, authority builds, and mid difficulty terms move to pages that convert. This is where SEO stops being a cost line.
Month 6 and beyond: content published months ago keeps earning without new spend, which is the structural advantage SEO holds over ads. The right comparison is not SEO vs ads but the sequence between them, covered in Google Ads vs SEO.
What makes SEO faster
- Fixing technical debt first. Speed, crawlability, and index hygiene unlock everything downstream.
- Targeting intent, not volume. A hundred visits from buyers beat ten thousand from browsers. Commercial intent terms convert while big vanity terms mature.
- Publishing consistently. Two strong pieces a month beats twelve in January and silence until fall.
- Internal linking with intent. Every new page strengthens the money pages it links to. Sites become systems.
- Earning a few real links. A handful of relevant, legitimate links moves more than a hundred directory listings.
What makes it slower
Brand new domains with zero history, brutally competitive categories like law or insurance in Toronto, thin content published to fill a calendar, and stop start engagement where the work pauses every time a month gets busy. SEO punishes inconsistency more than almost any other channel, because the compounding only compounds if the inputs keep arriving.
So is it worth the wait?
If your buyers search before they buy, yes, and it is not close. Paid channels stop the moment spend stops. Content that ranks keeps selling for years, drops your blended acquisition cost, and makes every other channel cheaper. The businesses that win search in your category next year are the ones who started this quarter. That is the whole argument, and the SEO service page shows how we run it.
Questions, answered
Can SEO work in 30 days?
Technical fixes on an established site can move rankings within weeks, sometimes days. Building new visibility from scratch in 30 days is not realistic for competitive terms, and promises otherwise deserve skepticism.
How long does local SEO take in Toronto?
Local moves faster than national: a complete Google Business Profile, reviews momentum, and local pages often show map pack movement inside 4 to 8 weeks. Our local SEO checklist covers the sequence.
Should I pause ads while SEO ramps up?
Usually no. Ads buy the demand SEO cannot reach yet, and the two share learnings: search term data from ads sharpens SEO targeting. The sequence is covered in our Google Ads vs SEO guide.
